Are you ready to replace your lost teeth with dental implants? Your consultation is the first major step on your way to regaining a complete and healthy smile. How can you make this appointment as productive as possible? Come prepared to ask questions! In this blog post, we suggest a few questions that can help you start making your list.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

The majority of adults with missing teeth are good candidates for dental implants. However, you should still be aware if you have any risk factors that might make the procedure more complicated in your case. You should also learn if you may need preliminary care before you move forward with getting implants, such as a bone graft.

What Can I Expect During and After the Procedure?

Everyone has a slightly different experience during dental implant surgery. Most patients choose to be sedated, which allows them to feel virtually nothing throughout their procedure. In other cases, local anesthesia is used. Although it blocks pain signals, it is still possible to experience some pressure.

Once your procedure is complete, you will go through a recovery period. Most patients are able to return to their job within a day or two. However, symptoms like swelling and general discomfort can linger for several days — perhaps even a few weeks. When the time comes, your oral surgeon can provide detailed instructions to help you through your post-op period.

Are There Any Risks I Should Be Aware Of?

The success rate of dental implant procedures is more than 95%. As impressive as that is, it does still leave the slight chance that something will go wrong. Talk to your oral surgeon about how the risk of complications can be minimized. For example, you might need to quit smoking, be more proactive about caring for your overall health, or modify your eating habits.

When Will I Be Able to Return to Normal Activities?

Patients are often able to return to light activities within just a few days of their surgery. However, it could be a few weeks before your mouth feels normal. In the meantime, you should avoid vigorous exercise. You may also need to keep a close eye on your eating habits until your new prosthetic teeth are in place.

How Much Will My Procedure Cost?

The price of your procedure will depend on the number of implants you need, the extent of any preparatory services, and other factors. Your oral surgery team can provide a cost estimate for you, and they can explain your payment options. Most practices are willing to accept payment plans.

Do not forget to ask questions during your dental implant consultation! Have a list prepared so you and your care provider can have a productive conversation.
