Dental implants are often touted as the best form of tooth replacement, and they are! Once they are inserted into the jawbone, they can provide a remarkably strong base for crowns, bridges, and dentures. But what if your upper jawbone is weak or thin and cannot support traditional implants? Your oral surgeon might recommend that you receive zygomatic implants instead. Continue reading to learn more about this innovative treatment.

What Are Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic implants, also known as zygoma implants, are not placed in the jawbone. Rather, they are placed in the zygoma, which is commonly known as the cheekbone. Because the zygoma is very dense and strong, it is often an ideal base of support for implants and the restorations (crowns, bridges, and dentures) that go on top of them.

Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional implants and must be placed at a very specific angle in order to be successful. Because their treatment process is somewhat complex, they should always be placed by a specialist, such as an oral surgeon, as opposed to a general dentist.

What Are the Advantages of Zygomatic Implants?

Some outstanding benefits of zygomatic implants include:

  • No need for bone grafting. Normally, patients with a weak or thin jawbone require a bone graft before getting dental implants. Zygomatic implants may allow you to skip this step.
  • Potential for immediate loading. Zygomatic implants can support artificial teeth immediately after they are placed in the bone.
  • High success rate. This procedure is successful in about 97% of cases.
  • Able to provide full arch replacement. Zygomatic implants are effective for individuals who need to replace all of their upper teeth at once.
  • Fast healing time. It usually takes just 4 – 6 months for zygomatic implants to form a strong bond with the surrounding tissue.
  • Other advantages. Zygomatic implants offer many of the same benefits as traditional implants, including a strong bite force and a natural look/feel.

Are Zygomatic Implants Right for You?

Zygomatic implants are often recommended for people who:

  • Need to replace some or all of their upper teeth.
  • Are not a candidate for traditional dental implants.
  • Have suffered significant bone loss in their upper jaw.
  • Are tired of the frustrations that come with non-implant forms of tooth replacement, such as dentures and traditional bridges.

Zygomatic implants are an excellent option for many patients! Talk to a qualified oral surgeon to find out if they are right for you.
