After any sort of invasive medical procedure, it is important that you get enough rest! This allows your body to devote more resources to helping you heal. Of course, wisdom tooth extractions are no exception to this rule. Following your appointment, you should create time to relax — and you should get enough sleep. Granted, sleeping might be challenging when your mouth is sore. What can you do to sleep safely and somewhat comfortably as you are recovering? This blog post provides some helpful tips.

Keep Your Head Elevated

After wisdom tooth extractions, keeping your head elevated helps reduce swelling and promotes better circulation, allowing your body to heal more efficiently. It also prevents blood from pooling around the extraction site, which can cause discomfort.  Use a couple of pillows to prop your head up while you sleep, or sleep in a recliner so your body is at a slight incline.

Take Pain Relievers

Pain can be a significant barrier to getting quality sleep after wisdom tooth extraction. Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers before bedtime. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare professional.

Create a Comfortable Sleeping Environment

A comfortable sleeping environment is essential for a restful night. Make your room dark and quiet to promote relaxation. Consider using blackout curtains and a white noise machine if necessary. Your bed should be cozy, with soft bedding and supportive pillows. Ensure the temperature of your room is slightly cool, as a cooler environment can enhance sleep quality.

Apply Ice to Reduce Swelling

Swelling is a common issue after wisdom tooth extractions. Applying ice can help alleviate this problem and provide a numbing sensation. Wrap ice cubes in a cloth or use a cold pack and apply it to your cheek near the extraction site. Do this for 15-minute intervals several times a day, and especially before bedtime.

What Not to Do

There are several things you should avoid doing after wisdom tooth extractions to promote safe and comfortable sleep:

  • Do not drink alcohol to fall asleep. Alcohol can interfere with your body’s healing process and cause complications.
  • Do not fall asleep with gauze in your mouth. If you decide to catch some shuteye while the gauze is still at your surgical sites, have someone wake you every 20 minutes in order to reduce the risk of choking.
  • Do not ignore red flags like unusual pain. If you experience severe discomfort or any signs of infection, contact your dentist or oral surgeon immediately.

Getting enough rest is vital for your recovery! Take steps to promote high-quality sleep after your wisdom tooth procedure.
