Hearing problems commonly come with increasing age. Many people even have to deal with a persistent ringing in their ears, a condition known as tinnitus. But did you know that tinnitus can be caused by things other than the passage of years? There is a strong link between it and TMJ disorder (TMD). This blog post explores how they are connected and how you may be able to find relief.

TMD and Tinnitus: How Are They Connected?

A meta-analysis published in 2018 showed that there is a higher prevalence of tinnitus in individuals with TMD than in individuals without it. A separate study, published in 2019, uncovered that tinnitus related to TMD was more common among biological females than males, and they had a younger average age than typical tinnitus patients.

What might account for the connection between TMJ disorder and tinnitus? The most likely explanation is the fact that the jaw joints (the TMJs) are located very close to the ears. When one or both jaw joints suffer damage or become inflamed, that can affect the cochlea, an important structure in the inner ear that translates sound waves into electrical impulses. The cochlea has tiny hairs in it, and when incur damage, tinnitus can result.

Identifying TMD as a Cause of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can have various causes. How can you tell if TMD is to blame for the ringing in your ears? Here are some signs to look for:

  • You engage in bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching).
  • You frequently suffer from jaw pain, chewing difficulties, or decreased jaw mobility.
  • You often experience neck pain and headaches.
  • You experience vertigo.

Can TMD Treatment Make Tinnitus Go Away?

If you believe that you may have TMD, it is important that you seek care from a qualified practitioner. They can assess your jaw joints and recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs. You might need something as simple as home remedies or a special oral splint. In rare cases, though, surgery or other major procedures are necessary.

Treatment for TMJ disorder can reduce inflammation and swelling in the jaw joints. In turn, this may lower the risk of damage to the inner ear. As a result, you may notice a reduction in tinnitus. Your tinnitus might even go away completely!

Ringing in your ears can seriously interfere with your quality of life! If you have this problem, it is worth your time to consider TMD as its source.
