Earlobe repair is becoming an increasingly popular procedure. If your earlobes are severely stretched or torn, you may be curious about this treatment and what it can accomplish. This blog post provides a basic introduction to earlobe repair. Hopefully, it will give you the foundation you need in order to decide if you are interested in moving forward with this procedure!

Who Is a Candidate for Earlobe Repair?

Earlobe repair is designed to restore the appearance and form of earlobes that have been damaged or torn due to issues like:

  • Long-term use of heavy earrings.
  • Children pulling on earrings.
  • The use of gauges that increased in size and weight over time.
  • Earrings getting caught and pulled, usually by snagging on clothing.
  • Multiple piercings placed too close together.
  • Sudden traumatic injuries.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Earlobe repair is usually an easy procedure for patients. After a consultation during which your surgeon will examine your injury and learn about your health, they can plan the details of your treatment.

The procedure itself is nothing to be afraid of. It is usually performed under local anesthesia, so you will not experience any pain. Your doctor will clean your earlobe, remove excess skin, possibly rotate targeted tissues, and then close the incision in layers. Usually, both earlobes can be treated during the same appointment.

What Happens After Earlobe Repair?

You should be able to drive yourself home from your appointment, and you can expect to be able to return to work on the next day. If you have regular stitches (as opposed to absorbable ones), you may need to visit your surgeon to get them removed about one week after your procedure.

If you wish to re-pierce your years, you should wait at least three months, and the new piercing should be at least 3mm from your surgical site.

You might have a fine scar left after you heal, but it should not be overtly noticeable.

Are you bothered by the appearance of your earlobes? A qualified surgeon may be able to repair the damage and help you recapture your confidence!
